A present-day handicap for women's suffrage

2 March 1994 Media release by Rosemary Cadden

The Women's Suffrage Centenary, Parliament and the Constitution have been handicapped—but it's all in a good cause. The South Australian Jockey Club will conduct a racing carnival at Morphettville next Saturday (March 12) as a major event to commemorate 100 years of voting rights for women in SA.

And the races at the Women's Suffrage Centenary Cup Racing Carnival are named in its honour.

The Charles Kingston Handicap recognises the Premier of the day, who initially opposed the Bill but became one of its most fervent supporters. The feature event is the Women's Suffrage Centenary Cup, when the winner will receive a $2500 cup.

Other races are: the Parliamentary Handicap, the Great Petition Handicap, the Constitution Handicap and the 100 Years Handicap. The Maree Lyndon Plate recognises South Australia's first woman jockey.
