Sportswomen's names set in stone

A number of South Australian sportswomen today will step into The Pines Stadium at Gepps Cross to find their names have been permanently etched in commemorative paving stones. The paving stones acknowledge the achievements of 43 SA women involved in a wide range of sports-from archery and athletics to weightlifting and wheelchair sports.

Equestrian Gillian Rolton will speak on behalf of the women at today's official launch, attended by representatives from numerous sporting bodies in the State.

Gillian, who won a Team Gold medal in the gruelling Three Day Event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games was, in 1993, awarded the Order of Australia Medal for Service to Australian Sport.

Others attending the launch include:

Ice racing champion Karen Kah, who finished 11th overall in the recent Winter Olympics at Lillehamer and who has just retired after being the State Women's Champion for the past 10 years and the Australian Women's Champion for the past nine years

Heather Kschammer, a 2nd degree black belt in judo and a highly respected referee, being one of only two women in the Oceania region qualified to referee at all international events, including World Titles and Olympic Games

Mrs Jean Armstrong, a croquet player for 25 years who has represented South Australia in the State team and who has coached 13 players, men and women, who have represented South Australia

Rosemary Adey OAM who has represented SA and Australia in softball and who has been president of the Australian Softball Federation since 1982. She was awarded the OAM in 1985.

The launch will be conducted by Mrs Lorraine Rosenberg, Member for Kaurna, representing the Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Mr John Oswald.

The bricks were sponsored by Nubrik and the project supported by the Division of Recreation, Sport and Racing and the Department of Housing and Construction.
