Placard-carrying demonstrators to meet South Australian Governor

February 11, 1994 Media release by Rosemary Cadden

A group of "demonstrators" waving placards both pro and anti Women's Suffrage will greet South Australian Governor Dame Roma Mitchell when she attends a special Ecumenical Service tonight at St Peters Cathedral.

This will be just a taste of what's to happen inside the church:

  • women telling stories of past struggles;

  • mock conversations between the pioneering suffragists of a century ago;

  • comments on the trials and tribulations of ordained women;

  • segments celebrating women's lives and outlining women's hopes for 1994 and the years ahead.

The service will be led by the Rev. Sue Pain, one of the first women ordained in the Anglican Church, in December 1992.

"The service has been put together by a team of women from all denominations and backgrounds and promises to be very interesting, "Rev Pain said.

A place at the table a painting by Margaret Ackland which won a place in the 1993 Blake Religious Prize awards and is part of an art exhibition Women remembering the future, will be on display in the Church.

Banners produced by students from St Mary's College, Adelaide will also be displayed during the service.
